Stillness After
Saturday 7th February- Sunday 15th March 2026
Stillness After brings together new work by Nick Archer and A Lincoln Taber in an exhibition that unfolds quietly, yet lingers long after the first encounter. Shown at Rye Art Gallery until 15 March 2026, the exhibition invites viewers into landscapes and scenes that feel at once familiar and faintly disquieting places shaped as much by memory and emotion as by physical form.
Across painting and landscape-based works, Archer and Taber explore themes of nature, childhood, loss, and the self. Their images are marked by subtle interventions: traces of human presence, echoes of lived experience, and moments suspended between, before and after. Children appear not simply as figures, but as symbols of vulnerability, imagination, and time passing. Landscapes become repositories of memory sites where absence is felt as strongly as presence. Nature is represented by abundance and beauty, memento mori, sometimes with a sting - provoking the imagination to consider the antagonistic harmonies of our existence.
Rather than offering any narrative closure, Stillness After allows space for reflection and a story that continues. Whilst these paintings suggest fading and emotional residues over time they encourage the viewer to slow down and attend to what remains when movement, noise, or certainty has passed. In this 'stillness' the exhibition asks us to consider how places carry meaning, how memories persist, and how loss quietly reshapes our sense of self.
Together, Archer and Taber offer an experience of gentle intensity, one that rewards careful looking and invites a deeply personal response.
